Abstract

The Conclusion returns to the theme of disputed territories. It argues that American rock and roll of the 1950s is distinct from the youth cultures that came afterwards because of its lack of cultural legitimacy (and aspirations thereto) and the emphasis on, as Jack Good notes ‘fun’. That these should be defining characteristics helps to further position King Creole as being emblematic of the disputed territories of American youth culture in the 1950s.
