Abstract

Chapter 2 explores ideas about disgust in depth. For many people the very thought of the processes that our bodies experience in order to chew, swallow, digest, and excrete what we ingest is a combination of disgust and, simultaneously, for some, a cause for humor. The language used to express both disgust and mirth is imbued with food-based figures of speech that embrace a mix of both the comic and the abhorrent. Humor can be found in reaction to the taboos of ingesting certain matter and at the ways food is ejected by defecating, passing wind, urinating, eructating, and vomiting.
