Abstract

Chapter 3 provides a survey of how wealthy, privileged politicians—those democratically elected and those who have inherited or seized power—are seen by cartoonists, meme makers, and others who provide visual commentary. Greed is shown in political cartoons as bad. Public figures are seen as gorging, often cannibalizing the people over whom they have power. Political cartoonists portray obese figures as animals—swine—to make a political point, feeding on and off the people they are supposed to represent. Politicians are often caricatured using “Brown Humor.” Disgust requires not much more than showing piles of excrement to be eaten.
