Abstract

Chapter 4 explores the ways in which playing with food is portrayed in popular culture. Food and eating have a major role in the performative arts, often comic. Well-known examples of food and eating on screen that elicit laughter are discussed because each has become iconic within popular culture. The relationship between eating and sex is explored through cinema, and disgust is not far away in representations of food—the way and locations in which it is prepared and the hands that touch it. Predictably, excessive overeating leading to corpulence is a trope of disgust, closely bound up with humor.
