Abstract

Chapter 6 examines the way cultural responses to food aberration have made themselves a large and notable force on the Internet, specifically on the social media platforms of Instagram, YouTube, Twitter (X), and TikTok. The chapter focuses on the way that humor is integral to criticism of cooking methods that deviate from “traditional” forms, with attention to Italian and Asian cuisines. The chapter examines and problematizes the issue of authenticity. Addiitonally, the chapter highlights the importance of humor in these critiques when food is deemed to be adulterated and spoilt by cooks who do not, in the minds of the critics, respect the traditional ways of cooking using specific ingredients and cooking styles. Disgust is a prominent feature of these critiques.
