Abstract

The HR lifecycle outlines the key stages an employee experiences during their time in an organisation: recruitment and selection, onboarding/induction, development, performance and retention and separation. Recruitment involves attracting and selecting suitable candidates, while onboarding helps new hires integrate into the organisational culture. Development focuses on equipping employees with the skills needed for current and future roles. Performance and retention ensure employees are supported and recognised, encouraging long-term engagement. Separation, whether voluntary or involuntary, must be handled with care to protect employee well-being and organisational reputation. Each stage presents unique employee needs and requires tailored strategies from employers. The lifecycle is not always linear as employees may move between stages or repeat them as they take on new roles. Understanding and managing these stages effectively is essential for sustainable HR practice.
