Abstract
Dayton C. Miller (1866–1941), a prominent scientist and flute collector from Cleveland, Ohio, amassed the world&s;s largest collection of flutes and flute-related materials. His bequest, which included flutes, books, musical scores, iconography, patents, autographs, and photographs, arrived in 1941 at the Library of Congress. From his home base at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland to his world travels popularizing science and visiting flute workshops and local pawnshops, Miller collected flutes from around the world, forming a collection to document not only the history of the flute but he also to illustrate the endeavours of humans to create musical sounds.
