Abstract

Fritz Wildhagen (1878–1956), born into a wealthy family in Moscow, studied arts and painting in Berlin, and became a painter of landscapes. Apart from musical instruments, he collected antiquities and exotic objects. Wildhagen is an example of the egoistic aesthete who in turbulent times practiced a technique of escapism, creating a non-political, comfortable world of his own. Until World War II, Wildhagen was the owner of one of the most important private collections of musical instruments in Germany. His main interests were plucked and bowed string instruments, which are preserved in Copenhagen, Tokyo, and Berlin.
