Abstract

Daniel Sargent Pillsbury (1836–1902), one of the first Americans to collect historic brass musical instruments, was a stationer, printer, and wholesale paper dealer in New York City from about 1862 until his death in 1902. He began collecting about 1875, travelling extensively to seek additions. By the turn of the century, Pillsbury&s;s collection was considered the finest of its kind in the United States and was featured in a musical exhibition held at Horticulture Hall, Boston, Massachusetts in 1902 by the piano manufacturers, Chickering & Sons. In 1928, Henry Ford purchased the entire collection from Mrs. Pillsbury for his new museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
