Abstract

This chapter reflects on what has changed in the past six years since the author began working on this book project. As it was being finalized in 2024 and early 2025, motherhood and reproductive justice were front and centre in the U.S. presidential election and inauguration, highlighting family and reproductive rights as key issues for the candidates. In parallel with this political context, mothers were also centre-stage on Broadway and Toronto but in a very different light as productions showcased the complexities of motherhood. Theatre performances continue to fight for basic human rights to have, not have, and parent a child. As Yvette Nolan says in an interview with the author, theatre is “resistance that&s;s embodied.”
