Abstract

This chapter discusses some core elements of critical realism, and how they relate to the sociology of knowledge. I focus first on Bhaskar’s insights into the distinctiveness of (natural) scientific activity before turning to his understanding of mechanisms and to the metaphor of depth in critical realist explanations. I then discuss the importance of structure, culture and agency, with reference mostly to Margaret Archer’s work in these areas. In line with the spirit of critical realism, this chapter plays a kind of underlabouring role relative to later chapters.
