Gendered survey of Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka
Abstract
This chapter presents the data for the presence of women in various capacities as monastic and lay patrons in the literary records as well as the archaeological records from the early monastic sites in Sri Lanka. The survey of archaeological sites in Sri Lanka was an extension of the field survey conducted previously at Indian sites. This study was undertaken with the aim of providing a benchmark for the gendered understanding of archaeological data from Buddhist sites for the whole of South Asia.
