Abstract

This work highlights the various invisible aspects of a female Buddhist practitioner, both lay and monastic, in early Buddhism. Each chapter deals with little-explored dimensions of the lives of Buddhist women. It attempts to undo some of the glaring disparities between different kinds of historical and archaeological records by reinterpreting and reanalysing some of the existing data on the subject. On a wider plane, the data from this study further underline the involvement and agency of the laity in Buddhism.
