Abstract

This chapter presents the case study of Mana, a folk healer ( curandera ) whose practices reveal the syncretic and psychologically resonant nature of Santa Muerte devotion. Through Mana’s work, the chapter explores how Santa Muerte functions as a mediator between the living, God, and the spirits of the dead ( muertos ). It introduces the core Jungian argument that Santa Muerte acts as the missing “Fourth” element that completes the patriarchal Holy Trinity, integrating the repressed feminine and shadow aspects of the divine into a more psychologically whole Quaternity. The author also interprets muertos as objectifications of the personal and transpersonal Shadow. Finally, the chapter posits that in a world saturated with destructive energy, Santa Muerte serves as the object-cathexis for the death drive ( mortido ), providing a spiritual container for the violence that permeates society.
