Abstract

People access many goods by using online technologies. They build personal and professional relationships on social media, watch their favorite shows and movies on streaming platforms, and even outsource their security, comfort, and energy monitoring to integrated smart home hubs. However, all this comes at a cost: when someone uses these apps, smart devices, and online platforms they provide technology companies and their third-party affiliates with access to personal data. Among other uses, this data may be used for targeted advertising, for training artificial intelligence, or for scientific research.
