Abstract

The use of technology in the context of SLT is a vast and rapidly evolving topic. This chapter will discuss how communication has evolved in the digital age onto a wealth of computer-mediated communication (CMC) platforms and will also consider therapy supported by applications (apps) and/or delivered through digital media; artificial intelligence (AI), technological equipment which enhances therapy (e.g. virtual reality), and technology delivering new solutions in swallowing and communication therapy such as electrical stimulation and high-technology augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Each topic is presented alongside a discussion of risks or costs and benefits, for example, balancing efficiencies in time and cost against potential risks to privacy and health equity. The rapidly changing environment of technology means that recommendations of specific platforms, programmes and apps would almost certainly be outdated by the time of publication. This chapter focuses on introducing the array of technologies SLTs can utilise in clinical practice and the evidence base to date for using these tools. Online resources are presented that are likely to be updated with technological advances so as to remain clinically relevant. The worked example presents working with an individual using technology with adapted access to communicate with friends and family.
