Global Planning Education and Online Pedagogy
Abstract
Efforts to expand the coverage of international perspectives in planning curricula coincide with the introduction of new teaching pedagogies, in particular wider utilisation of online technologies. This chapter examines the origins and utility of online pedagogies to advance comparative international planning. Initial widespread reluctance among planning educators to shift from the face-to-face instructional practices gave way to the necessity of this technology only under the duress caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. One outlier, the planning programme at the University of Florida (USA), already offered its accredited planning programme prior to the pandemic, including applications to its comparative international planning offerings. The Florida case offers a useful perspective on the benefits and challenges of using online pedagogy to advance comparative international coverage because it has contributed not just to online student learning but for those pursuing their education away from the on-campus face-to-face model.
