Abstract

Building upon Comparative Planning and Policy Mobilities literatures – of which there is a significant element of overlap – this chapter documents how despite a proliferation in ways of ranking and classifying cities, there is a lack of discussion of how to facilitate policy transfer between cities that operate at fundamentally different scales. This is particularly the case when considering new urban frontiers such as the East-Asian cities which are opening up and extending urban debates but which, despite their size, may offer meaningful lessons to other places at smaller scales. To achieve this, and as a means to foster further debate in the field, the chapter sets out a series of themes researchers might consider to select, explore, and draw down lessons from comparative case studies which sit at significantly different urban scales, but which may offer lessons that are no-less valid to other places.
