Abstract

This chapter begins its investigation into ludonarrativity by exploring the concept of play, especially sacred play, and its relationship to magic circle concepts, but extends beyond this discussion to look at the nature of methexis, how methectic play prompts player identification, and how it contrasts with mimetic play. This chapter also first introduces the idea of games as toys. The chapter concludes with an examination of the two types of avatar representation: the surrogate and the agent.
