Self-Expression Teletherapy Intervention for Queer and Gender Diverse Youth
Abstract
This chapter provides instructions for conducting a clinical intervention aimed at empowering queer and gender diverse youth to express themselves and process gender expression through a playful format in teletherapy sessions. Using an online website that allows the user to dress up a virtual doll or avatar, clients can practice choosing preferred hairstyle and clothing options that might not otherwise be allowed, readily available, or comfortable for them to wear. Through processing questions, therapists may discuss with clients their experience of the exercise, what it would be like for them to make these changes in their life, if there are any barriers holding them back from making changes, and what it would be like to deconstruct any systems of oppression holding them back.
