Abstract

The Introduction situates the project of this book within the growing field of marine environmental history. It begins with a brief discussion of the historiographical context for the book. It then discusses three major issues and how they shaped the structure of the book: the framework of the early modern era as a useful focal point for major changes in the world’s oceans and how people related to them, how to understand the global history of the period without over-emphasizing the real changes driven by European maritime expansion, and what kinds of sources do and do not exist for the period.
