Abstract

This chapter focuses on the intersection of global movement, language, and schooling at the early childhood, primary, and secondary levels. It identifies specific themes that have been taken up in multiple geographic locations. The chapter also focuses on the notion of “ecologies” to not only address these themes but also point to ways in which individual factors and components mutually affect and influence one another to shape the landscape of schooling for linguistically diverse learners. It addresses aspects of schooling and learning through a lens of mobility, and considers implications for youth being schooled in languages other than their heritage language. The chapter uses sociocultural and social-justice-oriented perspectives to explore the ecologies of schooling for emergent bilinguals across the globe within a context of mobility. It explores how emergent bilinguals often must learn, and demonstrate learning, in unfamiliar languages and in contexts where their languages, literacies, and cultures are not recognized and/or valued.
