Abstract

The various chapters in this handbook highlight the multifariously intertwined and inseparable connections between language and culture. At its root, language consists of conventionalized units, structures, and patterns of form and meaning that have been moulded in their cultural surroundings and are renegotiated in discursive interactions of speakers sharing their experiential contexts to varying extents. Thus, the study of linguistic forms and their meanings is inherently reflective of the underlying culturally based knowledge and conventions as expressed through language use.
