Introduction
Abstract
When I started to think about revising this book it was instantly clear that I had a big job on my hands. The amount of change in the field since 2008, when I wrote the first version, was intimidating. There has been a huge shift in focus in terms of aesthetic theories; new theoretical and intellectual movements; extensive cultural, technological, political, and social shifts. History itself is under attack in many areas of the world, not least Europe, both from those conservative voices seeking to close down debate and from progressive writers seeking redress for the continuing violence of imperialism.
