Abstract

This chapter examines the popular literature on psychic development and spiritual empowerment, with a particular focus on practices that facilitate after-death communication. It analyzes guidebooks written by mediums and afterlife self-help authors that detail techniques such as automatic writing, channeling, and meditation as pathways to accessing otherworldly knowledge and support for healing, self-improvement, and well-being. Key topics include continuing bonds, prayers and affirmations, psychic abilities, sacred signs and symbols, spirit guides, and mediumistic or channeled communication with the dead. The chapter also explores the Rainbow Bridge subgenre on animal afterlives, the use of entheogenic substances, and the role of the pineal gland as a latent psychic organ or “third eye.” Afterlife memoirs and spiritual tools are assessed for how they frame the dead as postmaterial beings who offer therapeutic guidance. Finally, the chapter investigates the therapeutic relationship between the living and the discarnate spirit society through metaphysical technologies, altered states, and liminal settings—reframing afterlife contact as a vital feature of the new sacred paradigm.
