Abstract

This chapter analyses the ways in which Leave Taking has been staged, revised and reviewed from its first production in 1987 through to the 2018 revival at the Bush Theatre in London, looking at five productions in total. It draws on newspaper reviews, programme notes and archival materials to examine the ways in which directors, actors and designers have approached the play and the ways in which critics have interpreted its relevance to contemporary Britain, most recently in relation to the Windrush scandal. The chapter also considers the play&s;s status in the Black British theatre canon and in British theatre in general.
