Abstract

This chapter examines Pinnock&s;s dramatisation of the ways in which women and racialised people are exploited, the dramaturgical strategies she employs in ‘writing wrongs’ and Saidiya Hartman&s;s notion of ‘critical fabulation.’ It focusses on plays that address, directly or indirectly, the legacies of transatlantic slavery and consider questions of agency, victimhood and justice. The chapter analyses Mules, Can You Keep a Secret ? The Dinner Party and Rockets and Blue Lights and pays particular attention to the ways in Pinnock rewrites history to bring marginalised people into focus and the use of ghosts and hauntings as a means of bringing the present and past into dialogue.
