Abstract

This short Afterword reflects upon the most recent changes to Britain’s road network in the context of one final road trip from Lancaster to Cornwall in April 2025. Both a new section of the A30 in Cornwall (which completes the dualling of the road some fifty years after the work was first commissioned) and the introduction of SMART motorway on the M5/M6, north and south of Birmingham, speak powerfully to discussions in the previous chapters on the materialities of change in relation to journeying, kin/aesthetics, the automation of the driving experience, dis/orientation and the complexities of place attachment when threatened with transformation and loss.
