Abstract

The bicycle and moped represent the need to overcome gaps in rural and urban development by leveraging a more inclusive approach. As urban cities are rapidly expanding, the image symbolizes the need for building sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11). It includes a more thoughtful engagement between the rural landscapes – deemed the hinterland – and how production and consumption are taking place in both rural and urban spaces (SDG 12), including how food is produced and delivered. With increased demands of energy (SDG 7) from urban areas, these two modes of transportation also reflect a focus on ensuring that planning along the rural-urban nexus adapts to or mitigates climate change (SDG 13). The chapter includes a discussion on uneven urban development and provides examples for building greener, more resilient and inclusive cities. The case study introduces the Somali case of internally displaced people due to climate change.
