Abstract

This chapter introduces how gender equality manifests itself across development and highlights the importance it plays in achieving sustainable development. Gender inequality negatively impedes advances made, for example, inequality extends beyond just access to resources. Gender and development are closely examined and their mainstreaming, using the example of unpaid care and domestic work to illustrate their applicability across the Global North and the Global South. The chapter concludes by making the case for how breaking silos and all changemakers matter to achieve gender equality. On economy and finance , for example, increasing access to capital for women (including intra-household) is crucial. On governance and policymaking , new legislation can support dealing with some of the thornier issues, such as reducing pay gaps. On collective and individual action , creating social groups will increase empowerment. On science and technology , women still face significant barriers in entering male-dominated fields.
