Abstract

Under “business-as-usual,” the world has reached global tipping points that are begging for radical change. The world now lives outside the safe operating space of the planet, and is living beyond its means sooner each year. Worsening trends (e.g., youth unemployment, inequality, and marginalization) highlight a need for transformation. This chapter uses the example of subsidies as the fuel to business-as-usual, but also to illustrate their potential in detoxifying development. To capture what business-as-usual looks like, the chapter investigates SDG 2: Zero Hunger.
