Abstract

To achieve a transformation in sustainable development, we need to activate four key changemakers. 1 As illustrated in Figure II.1 with drawings from South African artist Marizanne Linde, the four changemakers are governance and policymaking , economy and finance , individual and collective action and science and technology. Governance and policymaking is represented by a town hall that needs all of us to finish its construction. Economy and finance captures how the infamous bull on Wall Street in New York City, symbolizing economic growth in the stock market, should not just be filled up like a piggybank. We need to mobilize the funds to support sustainable development. The three signs in individual and collective action proclaimin g Stand together for Change represent how our individual engagement is needed to create a resounding tenet for a common cause. The gears and lightbulb in science and technology illustrate how innovation and scientific discovery can lead to change, including through problem-solving that relies on human ingenuity and our adaptive capacities.
