Abstract

The town hall representing governance and policymaking needs everyone’s help to get it finished. As the first changemaker, this chapter lays out the case for governance and improved policymaking to achieve the SDGs. It introduces how to address wicked problems through governance. Given development trends, the chapter investigates how local and sub-national governance can make a difference. Three featured case studies, focused on man-made famines, improved food security in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, and land governance, demonstrate the importance of governance and policymaking. The chapter concludes with steps to improve the effectiveness of governance and policymaking, including reforms and localization efforts.
