Abstract

The gears and lightbulb in science and technology illustrate how innovation and scientific discovery lead to change, including through problem solving that relies on human ingenuity and improved adaptive capacities. As the fourth changemaker, this chapter lays out the importance of closing research and development gaps and captures the interplay between science, politics, and society. Featured case studies call for a diversity of knowledge and shifts in knowledge production in development. The importance of partnerships and collaborations to address complex and wicked development challenges, including having the right data, is emphasized. The chapter critiques the potential for artificial intelligence to leave no one behind and concludes with an example of all four changemakers in action to achieve the impossible.
