Digital Media and Immersive Therapeutic Approaches in Interpersonal Violence and Trauma Processing
Abstract
This chapter explores the integration of audiovisual tools into therapy for survivors of interpersonal violence. It examines how media forms such as video diaries, photovoice, digital storytelling, and therapeutic filmmaking can help survivors access, process, and transform traumatic memories. Drawing from trauma theory, narrative identity, and expressive arts therapy, the chapter outlines how audiovisual media facilitate multisensory engagement and promote emotional regulation, narrative coherence, and empowerment. Case studies and pilot research highlight the therapeutic benefits of these tools, particularly for clients who may struggle with traditional verbal therapy. The chapter argues that audiovisual methods offer survivors a creative pathway toward healing by externalizing internal experiences and fostering a sense of agency and voice. Recommendations for ethical implementation and future research directions are discussed, emphasizing the need for trauma-informed and consent-driven practices. Ultimately, audiovisual media are positioned as powerful complements to clinical interventions in the context of trauma recovery and posttraumatic growth.
