From Virtual Skies to Real-World Impact
Abstract
This chapter traces the evolution of 3D simulations from early online flight games to their broader applications in military, commercial, and training environments. Beginning with the author&s;s personal involvement in pioneering online games like WarBirds , the narrative illustrates how these early platforms laid the groundwork for modern massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) and immersive training technologies. Through key moments such as piloting NASA&s;s Space Shuttle simulator and working with defense simulation teams, the chapter explores how interactive simulations transitioned from entertainment to serious applications. It also outlines how 3D environments are now being reshaped by artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR), which collectively offer new possibilities for human connection, training, and storytelling. The chapter positions simulations as not only technical innovations but as cultural and educational tools that are redefining how people interact, learn, and collaborate across virtual and real-world spaces.
