Abstract

This chapter explores international efforts in adult literacy and education (ALE). It first discusses the global significance of ALE and provides an overview of evolving perspectives on adult literacy, which now includes ALE&s;s benefits not only at the level of the individuals, but also at the level of communities, society, and the world. The chapter highlights the diversity of ALE programs and emphasizes the importance of contextual factors in designing, implementing, and evaluating these initiatives. Drawing on examples from Germany and Türkiye , working with a wide range of adult learners, the authors identify key elements that contribute to a program&s;s effectiveness. By examining global approaches, the chapter encourages reflection on local practices and sharing of global experiences to enhance policy and practice.
