Abstract

The chapter begins with a general overview comparing andragogical (adult-focused) versus pedagogical (child-focused) principles of learning and instruction. Next, a description of the disparity in research between children versus adults gaining literacy skills is explored. This section is followed by an examination of studies that have directly compared children and adults with low literacy skills on the critical foundational skills described in Chapter 3. The skills that are highlighted are word recognition processes, spelling abilities, vocabulary knowledge, and writing skills.
