Abstract

This chapter discusses the increased focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of adult literacy education that resulted from the country's increased attention to DEI following the televised murder of George Floyd. The chapter expands the reader's focus on DEI as a matter of policing, to DEI as relevant to all contexts, but specifically to adult literacy education. The chapter defines diversity, equity, and inclusion, discusses bias, oppression, and privilege, describes how bias might look in adult literacy education and provides actions that adult literacy educators can take to incorporate DEI to reduce the incidence and impact of bias in adult literacy education.
