Abstract

This chapter explores contemporary views regarding the nature of frames, framing, and framing effects. Theoretical debates about framing are outlined and evaluated with the goal of suggesting opportunities for the future of framing research. Comparative contrasts of different modes of framing (e.g., equivalence and emphasis), as well as framing and its linkages with conceptually related theoretical phenomena (e.g., agenda-setting and priming) are discussed. Additionally, the role of cultural and other identity-based experiences is emphasized as integral considerations for future researchers to conduct nuanced and inclusive investigations aiding in further framing theory development.
