Social Sharedness and the Emergence of a Shared Reality in Small Groups
Abstract
In this chapter, we examine the many ways that our involvement in groups creates a shared reality. Meaningful social interaction requires a considerable amount of widely varied types of sharedness across individuals. Although a certain degree of sharedness is required for groups to function successfully, we argue that the effects of sharedness do not affect group performance in a uniformly positive manner, but rather depend significantly upon the type and amount of sharedness in addition to the group interaction context.
