Interaction in Small Groups
Abstract
Socially shared cognition is an emergent construct that is produced during and influences discussion in small decision-making groups. This chapter addresses how properties of cognition at the individual level are scaled up to explain group processes and outcomes. Of interest is how participants manage interaction in ways that are consistent with identities that emerge during discussion. The chapter concludes with an analysis of a transcript in which members discover that they disagree, identify the substance of the disagreement, and decide whether and how to continue discussion in a manner that is responsive to emergent identities.
