Abstract

The proliferation of digital platforms and the evolution of multimedia content have transformed how information is consumed and disseminated. This shift has led to a significant concern regarding the spread of visual misinformation, which encompasses false or misleading content conveyed through visual and auditory mediums. This chapter summarizes recent insights about visual misinformation, examining its definitions, categories, processing mechanisms, and implications. Drawing on recent studies and theoretical frameworks, the chapter explores how visual misinformation differs from textual misinformation in terms of cognitive and emotional processing. It also highlights the challenges in detecting and combating visual misinformation, especially with the emergence of deepfake technology and synthetic media. In response to these challenges, we discuss various approaches to reduce individual&s;s susceptibility to visual misinformation, such as media literacy education and provenance cues. However, there remains a need for further research to assess the effectiveness of these interventions, understand their underlying mechanisms, and develop innovative strategies that address the evolving information landscape. Overall, this chapter emphasizes the urgency of addressing visual misinformation in the digital age and the need for nuanced interventions to safeguard the integrity of information.
