Abstract

Human-AI teams (HATs) are gaining prominence, given the widespread deployment of sophisticated AI agents imbued with heightened reasoning, processing, and interaction capabilities. Trust is vital within the scholarly arena of human-AI teaming as it is both an enabler of team action and a product of team bonding and association. With the growing societal concern regarding the ethical footprint of AI-based technologies, uncovering the intricate relationship between trust and ethics has become increasingly pertinent to this line of research. While the notion of ethics is critical when considering the societal impact of AI, through this chapter, we postulate how ethics serves as a guiding lens for designing AI-enabled artifacts, which ultimately can be critical for sustaining and maintaining teamwork in human-AI teams. We also discuss and develop a vision for how various design facets (such as communication) and aligned societal considerations (such as policy) form a fundamental basis for trust and rapport building. We conclude by discussing multiple pathways for theoretical expansion and empirical validation to strengthen and consolidate these discussions to enrich the emergent scholarship on ethics in human-AI collaboration and teamwork.
