Abstract

A long tradition in philosophy and linguistics has treated metaphors mainly as a version of figurative language. A more recent view is that metaphors are an indispensable part of human cognition, allowing people to think about abstract and complex goals in terms of domains with which they have more concrete experience. This chapter discusses this line of research and its implications for communication, judgment, and decision-making.
