Abstract

This chapter addresses two key challenges for contemporary ideological analysis. The first is the remarkable resurgence of radical conservative ideologies. Long seen as moribund, these have returned to mark the political landscape across the globe, challenging liberal, neoliberal and traditional conservative ideologies. The second challenge is how we can make sense of the global dimensions of these movements. These global dimensions require an approach to ideology that is structured yet capable of being deployed flexibly in diverse settings. Although explicitly nationalist, today’s radical conservative movements are also internationalist: they share ideological resources, copy strategies, form common organisations and frequently see themselves as part of a shared ideological struggle. A particular vision of the international plays a key role in these wider ideological processes and movements.
