Abstract

Cold case homicides present some of the most challenging and emotionally charged investigations in the criminal justice system. As traditional leads fade and witnesses disappear, forensic science often becomes the last and best hope for resolution. This chapter explores the evolving role of the crime lab in cold case investigations, with a focus on practical strategies, technological advancements, and collaborative approaches that can help law enforcement agencies reexamine unsolved homicides. Drawing from over three decades of investigative experience, the author provides a first-person perspective on how modern crime labs contribute to case review, prioritization, and resolution. Key forensic disciplines—including DNA analysis, fingerprint re-evaluation, ballistics, and forensic pathology—are examined in the context of both public and private lab capabilities. The chapter also addresses real-world limitations such as budget constraints, evidence degradation, and misunderstandings between investigators and lab personnel. Through anonymized case studies and field-tested lessons, readers will gain a deeper understanding of how to work with crime labs effectively, what resources are available, and how to apply forensic tools strategically in the pursuit of justice. This chapter serves as a guide for detectives, prosecutors, advocates, students, and forensic professionals seeking to unlock the full potential of forensic science in solving cold case homicides (NIJ, 2022; FBI, 2023; ATF, 2023; Interpol, 2021) .
