Abstract

Investigative genetic genealogy (IGG), also known as “forensic genetic genealogy,” is still a new tool available for law enforcement, with the first successful case receiving media attention in 2018. The infamous “Gold State Killer” case, which went unsolved for 42 years until this new technique, opened the door up to law enforcement to reexamine cold case homicides and other violent crimes. Eight years later, over 650 criminal cases have been solved with the assistance of forensic genetic genealogy. 1
