Establishing & Maintaining Cold Case Units
Abstract
While most acute law enforcement crises receive immediate and sustained attention for as long as the situation exists, the crisis of unsolved homicides in the United States receives little attention. It is often addressed with ill-conceived approaches that fade with time and lack of success. The Murder Accountability Project estimated that from 1965 to 2023, there were nearly 346,000 unsolved homicides and non-negligent manslaughters based on their interpretation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Uniform Crime Report data (Project: Cold Case Project, n.d.).
