Abstract

In this chapter, the author presents alternatives to the status quo in international police reform. Academics, NGOs, those in the UN system, the consultancy class, and other stakeholders should refuse to continue current reform practices in solidarity with activists and civil society groups seeking justice, ultimately working toward abolishing policing. The chapter presents the knowledge and wisdom of academics and activists, rooted in verifiable knowledge, that can help guide non-carceral alternatives to policing and police reform in varying contexts, focusing on both processes and policy development. In particular, the author outlines the change that is sought and discusses decolonial feminism and transformative justice, both of which inform alternative initiatives. Various abolition-related approaches and ideas for decolonizing the global economy through degrowth and pro-poor activities and policies are then discussed.
